What is Oscommerce?

Oscommerce software is a Open Source online shop e-commerce solution that is available for free.

It comes with a feature rich set of shopping cart functionality that allows store owners to setup, run, and maintain online stores.

Everything you need to get started in selling products and services over the internet, from the Catalog frontend that is presented to your customers, to the Administration Tool backend that completely handles your products, customers, orders, and online store data.

Oscommerce has attracted a large and growing community that consists of store owners, developers, service providers, and enthusiasts who support and work with each other on their online business. There are over 6,000 add-ons available for free. Add-ons allow you to add additional features to your website and so you can change your website to suit your exact requirements.

It can be used on any web server that has PHP and MySQL installed – the most popular and best web hosting option is to use a Linux OS web server.

With over 14 years of operation Oscommerce is currently used by more than 74,000 live websites around the world.

It is released under the GNU General Public License and so you get full access to the source code.

Oscommerce was started in 2000 in Europe by a group of developers who wanted to offer a open source shopping cart website to the world.

Versions available are

Version 2.2
Version 2.3 released November 2010
Version 3.0 released on March 31st 2011 and is a major re-write of the program to incorporate an object-oriented backend, a template system to allow easy layout changes, and inclusion of an administration-area username and password definition during installation.

CE Phoenix – released in 2019 & is the only currently maintained version

Version 2 and 3 are completely different and there is no upgrade path between these versions.

Currently there are many more add-ons available for Version 2 due to being released for a longer period of time. Add-ons for version 3 are increasing as well.

If you have a version 2.2 or 2.3 website then as long as you have the latest security patches in place then the website will be fine for your requirements.
